Intercultural Communication in the US Classroom

On March 20, 2013, OIS partnered with the NCSU Graduate School to conduct a FIT (Fundamentals in Teaching) workshop on Intercultural Communication in the US Classroom. This is the fifth time that the OIS has participated in the execution of this workshop and we are happy to announce that we’ve added fifteen new attendees to our workshop alumni list.

This workshop focused on some expectations inside the US classroom, cultural values that may influence such learning environment, as well as various teaching techniques that would address different cultural values and contribute to effective teaching and learning.

This time we decided to try a different format in order to incorporate more audiovisual material created to illustrate different cultural values as they may manifest themselves in the classroom, and to motivate insightful and interesting discussions on the above mentioned topics. The workshop was very successful and fun, and as always, it was a great pleasure to work with Dr. Barbi Honeycutt and Ms. Kamon Hester from Graduate School. We are looking forward to seeing you at our next workshop in Fall 2013!

Cultural Showcase: Brazil

On Wednesday, February 27th, as part of our series of cultural events, the Office of International Services with the help of a few of our international students from Brazil showcased Brazil through food, dance, presentations and samba demonstrations. OIS wishes to extend a special thank you to Fernanda Da Costa Portugal Duarte and Mauren Turcatel, NC State PhD students from Brazil, as well as their friends from NC State, Wake Tech, Duke and the Brazilian Association of the Triangle for coordinating the organization of this event.

Brazilian Showcase took place in Caldwell Lounge at NC State Main Campus between 12pm and 2pm on February 27th, 2013. The showcase started with an informative presentation about Brazil, followed by a time for visitors to taste a wide variety of food and beverages from Brazil, such as mate tea, coffee, pao de queijo, brigadeiros, bean soup, topioca pudding and so much more. It was wonderful to hear stories about Brazil, Brazilian food and artifacts from all the volunteers staffing all the display tables in Caldwell lounge. The showcase ended with a wonderful samba demonstration after which the guests had the chance of learning a few steps of samba themselves.
